WEB BASED LEARNING

Instructional Design 1 – Observation

(Instructional Designer, Sr. Instructional Designer, Project Manager, Editor, QA)

Level I Instructional Design is a linear format that is typically an awareness or knowledge lesson. The content is provided one idea after another with no decisions regarding the path of presentation on the part of the learner. The learners are new to the topic area or have not received any training or OJT on the topic. The primary use of this type of instructional design is to introduce an idea or a concept. This level is also appropriate for rapid conversion of paper-based training material that does not require interactivities such as drag and drops, matching, and ranking.

Design Summary

  • Linear format
  • Targeted at Comprehension Level
  • Low – Medium Complexity Content
  • SME/R writes a substantial portion of material with assistance from us or nearly all content exists
  • Reusable/less complex design

Types of Interactions

  • Multiple Choice Questions
  • Fill in the Blank Questions
  • Reflective Questions

Interactions will be presented to learner approximately every 5-6 pages.

The following types of instructional design are not found in this level of product:

  • No/very limited case studies or scenarios
  • Branching
  • Discovery learning
  • Simulations

Instructional Design 2 - Application

(Instructional Designer, Sr. Instructional Designer, Project Manager, Editor, QA)

Level 2 Instructional Design allows students more control of the learning process by introducing multiple paths of navigation to achieve the objectives. Learners may be novices but are not experts through training or practical experience. Level 2 primarily focuses on comprehension and application of simple concepts, ideas, processes or procedures.

Design Summary

  • All of ID 1 plus…
  • Non-linear formats – low design re-use. More complex design.
  • Uses some existing content that is Low – Medium Complexity
  • Guided discovery learning
  • May be case study or scenario-based learning
  • Targeted at Knowledge Ready (An information problem – Fact, Principle, Procedure, Concept)
  • Medium interactivity
  • SME/R and we collaborate on writing content

Types of Interactions

  • All of Level 1 Plus…
  • Matching, and/or Drag and Drop Exercises
  • Click to reveal, and/or Drop down choices
  • Simple Branching

Interactions will be presented to learner approximately every 3-4 pages.

The following types of instructional design are not found in this level of product:

  • Complex Branching
  • Complex Case Studies
  • Complex Software Simulations
  • Complex simulations

Instructional Design 3 - Analysis & Action

(Instructional Designer, Sr. Instructional Designer, Project Manager, Editor, QA)

Level 3 begins to take the learner to the higher levels of the cognitive scale by focusing on application of more complex content as well as analysis and synthesis of that content. If needed, this level can be used for the highest level of cognitive learning – evaluation.

Design Summary

  • All of ID Level 2 plus…
  • Case Studies
  • Targeted at Performance Ready (a skill problem to be resolved)
  • Medium – High Complexity of Content
  • Extensive use of custom case studies or scenarios
  • High interactivity
  • We write majority of content with SME/R input and review
  • Limited simulations (e.g. QuickCase)

Types of Interactions

  • All of Level 2 Plus…
  • Complex branching
  • Simulations

Interactions will be presented to learner approximately every 2-3 pages.
